Qld to WA – Sand and Water 2022 23 October

A cool strong breeze continued all night with some calm periods making for a comfortable sleep. Some misty rain and total cloud cover makes for a cool morning.

We continue west stopping at Kimba for fuel and Polkdinney park for late morning tea, then turn south west off Eyre Highway along Port Kenny Road to The coast then along the Flinders Highway. When we take side roads off the highway we see few people, conversely traffic on both the Eyre and Flinders Highway is busy. The mallee county is looking good, some mallee trees are flowering but the under-storey plants, melaleuca we think, are just loaded with pure white to creamy white flowers, its quite stunning. We pass through some heavy showers but it’s clearing from the south though still windy.

Our camp tonight is Streaky Bay, we are parked just above the high tide mark on the beach, which is part of the caravan park, it is a very fine spot to camp for the night. We have lunch at the shell fuel station in town, they make delicious Indian style meals and dinner at the pub.

There are many bleached vacated bivalves of many sizes found amongst the sand, we have seen an occasional Razor shell at the low tide mark.

We walk the jetty after dinner and you can see part of the extensive seagrass meadows that exist in this bay. We note the seagrass that washes ashore here, likely one of the three species found in the Posidonia australis complex, very long 60mm and 12mm wide, perhaps Posidonia australis itself. Plenty of Pied Cormorants on the swimming enclosure attached to the jetty, fishing must be good amongst the seagrass.
