It was nice to wake up on the beach at Streaky Bay. It is overcast and cool with rain threatening from the west. We visit the local stores for some supplies then continue west.
Ceduna is our first stop, lunch at the bakery, it’s worth the stop.
Onwards we continue, stopping at the Head of the Bight, this is always worth a visit. You get great views of the coastline and it’s a hotspot for whale watching during the season May to October. Wildflowers are still out and we see plenty of Earless Dragons and Shingleback lizards. The inshore water is an aqua blue, very beautiful.
We have begun to notice thousands of critters heading north across the road at random intervals, our curiosity finally gets the better of us and we stop at one event, we find them to be juvenile (jumping only) grasshoppers at most 15mm long. At some of these crossings birds are feasting but have little impact on the hordes. We saw one bird with a beak full not content, it continued to bob about trying to collect more.
There is still plenty of daylight but the wind is pretty fierce and we are reading and watching YouTube in the comfort of our camper trailer. We haven’t seen many flies today and we surmise they are likely blown somewhere to the other side of the Nullarbor Plain.
We camp out the back of the Nullarbor roadhouse, it’s a fuel stop, but it provides a variety of accommodation options and meals. It has great amenities. The dining room is a good spot to watch the world go by and enjoy a meal. Plenty of interesting characters and vehicles stop here. The tin shed that was the old roadhouse still stands today and makes a good photo as the sun sets.
