2021 trip – day 35 Walpole to Margaret River

We had rain over night, not Qld rain but light gentle rain, made for a mist over the waters of Nornalup Inlet. We take a drive through the mountains to see the giant Tingle Tree and Circular Pool. Our truck is dwarfed by these living giants. We find the Circular Pool bathed in bubbles, almost a metre high in places but this is a natural event in the winter season.

The forest is alive with all creatures great and small but if you want to see what is flying around in the canopy bring your binoculars.

Then off through the Shannon National Park along what was once a logging track. We drove through miles of giant tree groves and heathlands, it a track worthwhile exploring but I would suggest during dry weather unless you have a good 4WD. We saw many birds, but Red Tailed Cockatoos were a delight to see.

We visit the Warren National Park and its giant Karri (Eucalyptus diversicolor) trees, the Centenary Tree is a towering 65m tall with a ladder up to a lookout platform, if you are willing to brave the climb. We also visit the Marianne North Tree, read the picture below.

We continue on along the Great Southern Highway to Cape Leeuwin the most South Westerly point in Australia and home of one of our largest light houses the iconic Cape Leeuwin lighthouse. While the township of Augusta is tainted by over development, the lighthouse and associated interpretive centre and great staff are wonderful. Given the Indian Ocean meets the Great Southern Ocean you forget the shortcomings of urban sprawl in what must have been a beautiful landscape. For those who come in the peak season be wary this place looks like it will get crowded.

It’s then onto Margaret River, which will be home for a couple of days.

Some of the most beautiful country! I hope you climbed the centenary tree for the view. I remember it being tough going up but tougher coming down. Have a beautiful Glass of Pemberton Riesling for me! Stay safe and enjoy 😊
