2021 trip – day 36 Margaret River

We are up early and head north to Cape Naturaliste. We walk along the Light House walk and look for whales, and though they are due soon, none were sighted today.

We wander the road between the Cape and Margaret River, enjoying a stop at a winery, tasting some very nice reds, a visit to the chocolate factory and olive grower who produces all manner of products from soaps, scents, olive oil and olives. The region is blessed with all manner of fine foods, wines and other natural products. We have lunch in cowaramup, it has some wonderful dining outlets.

Roaming the Margaret River region is a delight for all the sensors. Visually its a kaleidoscope of bushland, farms, wineries, coastal cliffs and beaches. It’s a very pretty place.

We visit the coast a few times enjoying once again the rugged cliffs and sandy beaches. This afternoon is spent exploring the Lake Cave. This cave is an active cave, ‘actively dripping’ and its the only cave on the Leeuwin-Naturaliste Ridge that has a permanent lake. Lake Cave is the deepest being 65 metres under ground, you walk down many steps past Karri trees to get to the entrance, it’s a stunning collection of cave formations and a lake with its own ecosystem of tiny cave dwellers. The suspended columns are impressive.

Finally we enjoy dining at one of the many restaurants and taverns in Margaret River.
