2021 trip – day 4 Cooper Creek to Betoota

We have a slow start to the day taking the opportunity to drive the 12km Windorah Nature Trail, a great chance to view more of Cooper Creek and the local wildlife amd learn about the local plants.

We travel onto Windorah and stop at the information centre, where we had a good chat with locals, got information on local roads and bought some wonderful artwork by Margaret Stephenson, also a local. We would also encourage those who collect sand and store in wine bottles or such like can now support a enterprising young local lad who is doing all the work for you making a jar of local sand dune sand available via the Information Centre. Its a good way to support the locals. Lunch is in the park, its a nice shady and cool spot under the trees, the lawn is lush and green.

We drove on more making stops to photograph unique landscapes, wildlife and waterways many carrying water, very special. The Native Wells are always special, an example of how first nations people successfully survived in this harsh environment.

We take a back road to Betoota fom the Diamantina Development Road, far less travelled and more interesting. The landscape varies between parched browns and verdent green. We find a flood boat on the bank of Farrers Ck, thats a great find.

We make the Betoota Hotel, a must do stop on trekking the west and a welcome oasis. Friendly staff and great camping down at the creek.

Here are some videos we made of the day.
