After leaving Betoota we drive through to Birdsville for fuel and then lunch at the bakery. We also stop at the information Centre to get details on the state of tracks through the desert. The centre is informative and staff friendly.

We make our way to Big Red, one of the largest dunes and is the start of the desert adventure. There are very few people on the desert as there are many track closures and water is across the track on the way to Mount Dare. We cross Eyre Creek, it and its channels have water, not much, but add the many shades of green in the swales, and the water makes it special, it’s not often you see the desert like this. The sand is soft in patches and some dunes are challenging. We stop just inside Munga-Thirri park and camp for the night. The stars are beautiful, the wind is strong and cool, great sleepimg weather.

Next day we continue west to Poeppel Corner, heading south along the eastern shoreline of a salt lake. Flies are our constant companion but a fly hat does its job to keep the little ……s at bay.

At Poeppel corner we head back Eastward to our next camp. Another spectacular starry night, we got some good night sky photos. While we see plenty of birdlife, the wildlife with the exception of small dragons, disclose their presence by foot prints only. The flowering plants are vey abundant, mainly yellows in colour but we find plenty of red Eremophila.
