2021 trip – day 8 Birdsville to Dulkaninna

The day starts with an early 1.5 hour small plane flight from Birdsville to the south over Goyder’s Lagoon following along the Diamantina River. The flight is magnificent getting a birds eye view of the landscape gives a new appreciation to the huge expanse of the desert and channel country. The river is full and the water is spreading out in a dendritic pattern over the land changing it from brown and stoney red to verdant greens. After the flight we have breakfast at the Birdsville bakery, it’s a fine breakfast. We then head south along the Birdsville Track. It’s very green in patches with flood water still present. The track is still in a flood damaged state so there is a need to be cautious. This is ok as we are stopping to take plenty of photos of the countryside and wildlife. Discovering paddocks of lilies is exciting to find.

Our stop for the night is a campsite on Dulkaninna Station, we are the only ones here. The facilities are great – flushing toilets and hot showers it’s luxury. The night is clear, the moon has joined us and its keeping the wildlife active, corellas and brolgas are calling, the camp fire is keeping a sneaky westerly breeze in check.
