2021 trip – day 9 – 10 Dulkaninna to Witchelina

We are awoken by the Corellas and Brolgas. The morning is cool and flies are absent, its a good morning. We head off with a stop at the wetlands near Dulkaninna Station, grebes, corellas, red-capped plover and commorants can be seen. We head off south stopping at the Lake Harry ruins then Marree for fuel and to stock up on food. Marree is a town full of history, the Ghan railway, indigenous people, Afghan and scenic sites, if you are an adventurous traveller.

We stopped at the township ruins of Farina, once a large town now gone, the consequence of moving the Ghan rail further West. There are many interpretive boards around what was a bustling head of the railway township.

Our camp tonight is the old shearers quarters at Witchelina Station a property owned and managed by Nature Foundation for conservation purposes. This is a great place to stay and explore. The property is 4,127 square kilometres, its a huge area of unique geology and landscapes. Next day we drive along the wildflower drive, a 116km bush track through the property. Its a dream drive if you are interested in geology, wildlife and wildflowers. Fabulous rock formations. (Mulga) Dragons and Spiny Tailed Skinks can be found along the tracks and birdlife is found at every stop. Mulga ants can move rocks larger than themselves, their nests are impressive, the country varies from rocky hills to beautiful red sand dunes, recent rain has put a green tinge across the land but equally there are plenty of signs that life can be tough. Here is a video of our tour around part of Witchelina https://gopro.com/v/57o1KQPggklXe

We catchup with the current on site manager and the crew, what a great bunch of friendly good people.
