We take a day to enjoy an adventure along the Witchelina Nature Reserve track. An old sheep station now owned by Nature Foundation South Australia. Its a track through changing semi arid landscapes dotted with River Red Gums, we also pass throigh stands of Mulga and Red Mallee. The track travels through the Nor West Gorge about 2 kilometres of great 4 wheel driving. We explore historical Ghan railway relics with the track taking under a couple of old rail bridges. There is a surprising amount of wildlife and flowering plants. A Brown Falcon puts on a delightful show until the local wood swallows decide he has been around too long and chase him off.
We find the Murrumbigee Waterhole complete with swans despite the region still suffering from drought.
The historical station buildings are great to explore and some are maintained for accommodation for a fee. The landscape changes and find razor sharp ridges of rick, sime made of white quartz making it a spectacular feature. Where these outcrops have decayed the quartz shimmers in the sun and the hill look like they are covered in a layer if hail.
We reach the homestead and book in for the night, the rotational manager is friendly and informative. With high clouds in the west we enjoy a wonderful sunset framed by the old homestead buildings and hills. The facilities at the camp are great, clean hot showers and flushing toilets are a luxury.
