Day 35 – Fitzroy Crossing
We head off to Geikie Gorge for a tour boat trip down the Fitzroy River. We were about mid way along the river, which stretches upstream 300km, which includes Dimond Gorge (see Day 24 – 26) where we were about a week ago and its travels a further 300km to reach the sea at King Sound. On the drive back from the Gorge we cross the old Fitzroy Crossing, which is perched only 30cm above the waterline.
We are now making our way to Halls Creek. It’s blowing a gale, skies are blue and its a dry 26 degrees.
At Halls Creek we fuel and coffee and head East along the Duncan Road. This is harsh, dry and rocky country but it’s certainly attractive and wildflowers still bloom.
We visit the original site of the Halls Creek township, now only a few walls, floors and memorials and it’s slowly being reclaimed by spinifex.
We drive about 40km along Duncan Road and then setup camp on the creek bed at Sawpit Gorge, only one other couple makes this 24 hour only campsite home for the night.
A chorus of frogs call into the night.
