Day 36

Day 36 – Sawpit Gorge ( Sawtooth Gorge) – Purnululu

Arise to a chorus of birds and frogs, watch a Hoary-headed Grebe hunting Rainbowfish and has success. Stop at Palm Springs an oasis in this dry landscape, I’m constantly surprised to find water just pouring out of the ground in a country that is so parched.

The road is rough and hard but easy to travel on, signs of flood damage are everywhere and road repair crews are doing their best to fix it before the next wet. It looks like they drag large used tractor tyres behind a vehicle to smooth out the corrugations.

We stop at Halls Creek to re-fuel and coffee, it pays to assume neither will be at the next destination.

We reach Purnululu and it’s as impressive as the tourist brochures state. We visit Echidna Chasm at noon. Its a chasm that narrows to the width slightly larger than a person in parts and the midday sun makes it pretty spectacular. Equally impressive is Cathedral Gorge. Photos just don’t do them justice.

We get back to Kurrajong campsite just in time to take photographs of the sunset.
