Western Australia adventure – 9 October 2025

We pass through Jeparit and travel along the shores of Lake Hindmarsh, it’s dry and well grassed it must be an impressive water body when full as it’s 13,500 hectares. Jeparit is also the home town of former prime minister Menzies.

We have a look at the silo art near the town of Rainbow.

Then onto Lake Albacutya almost as large as Lake Hindmarsh but also empty and covered in grassland. When in flood the lake is one of Australia’s significant wetlands, recognised under the Ramsar Convention for protection of wetlands. It has been known to attract waterbirds such asBanded Stilts, the rare Freckled Duck and the majestic White-bellied Sea Eagle.

The strong winds are forming waves through the farmland crops and grassland.

Our stop is the Wonga campground where we meet friends and fellow Eyre Bird Observatory caretakers, we enjoy their company around a warm fire under a clear starry night. Wyperfield NP is the home of mallee woodlands and Mallee Fowl. We learn today that Wimmera, the name of the river and region, is the Wotjobaluk and Wergaia peoples name for mallee.
