Wonga campground in Wyperfield National Park is a wonderful place to explore, red gum / Black Box woodlands and mallee. The birdlife is plentiful and there are kangaroos, dingoes and other critters yet to be identified.

The mixture of woodlands, grassy depressions, lakes when wet, dunes, groves of Cypress and understory makes for an interesting mix of native vegetation. The dry grassy lakes are a beautiful meadow of grasses and flowering herbaceous plants. Kangaroos and Emus are found grazing here. In the morning we hear dingoes calling.

The area is noted for its Mallee Fowl. We didn’t see any on this visit, but maybe next time…

The discovery walk is worthwhile exploring, the scenery is unique and pleasing to the eye, wildflowers are abundant and plenty of birds to try identify. The information centre in the park is very well put together with ample material to read about indigenous people, local wildlife, historical events and notable pioneers. The geology is explained and the local Parilla sand is the result of erosion and deposition that occurred 5 – 2 million years ago. Always fascinating to understand how past events no matter how long ago have such impact upon all that is here today.

A dawn walk to the Mt Mattingley Lookout was inspiring and stunning. We enjoyed our time in the Wimmera with our friends.
