Western Australia adventure – 15 September 2025

On leaving Fraser Range we made for the Eyre Bird Observatory (EBO) to camp amongst the mallee and under the stars prior to delivering stores to them from Perth. It was wonderful to catchup with wildlife friends and to walk amongst the white dunes. Still plenty of flowers to see.

The wind along the Nullarbor has been fierce, had we hoisted a sail on our truck roof we may have made it half way across the plain in one day.

Tonight we are camped at Eucla, WA’s most eastern community. It gives us a chance to visit the historic Eucla telegraph station, the final destination of transmission of telegraph messages from EBO during the era of colonial telegraph. Unfortunately, those bereft of intellect and common decency have placed graffiti on the Eucla historic site. That said the ruins are at times buried under sand and therefore safe.

Many road houses, businesses, people and Dundas Council are concerned about the world’s largest arid limestone karst being threatened by a colossal hydrogen/ ammonia project that will involve thousands of kilometres of powerlines, roads, and buried pipelines.
