We explore the Blue Bush and Pannikin Plain part of the Hampton Plateau today taking a lunch break at Cocklebiddy Roadhouse. After leaving Cocklebiddy we explore some of the old water infrastructure.
We find a couple of Bustards, Ardeotis australis it’s one of Australia’s largest birds. Their average size is 1m tall and their weight ranges from 4.5kg – 10kg.
We take note of the water points along our track, these are often just natural depressions in the ground that capture water which were later exploited and enlarged by colonials. Regularly used by wildlife and ferals like camels it’s a limited resource that needs protecting.
The geology is interesting and the area supports many caves and karst features.
