Great Australia Bight – Cliffs, sand, mallee and whales. 25 August 2024

Today we surveyed Kanidal Beach, Wader Beach and Twilight Cove. These are iconic coastal features, plenty of birds and quite an adventure to get there and back.

The landscape changes from beach to limestone hills, to fore dunes and beach again, interesting and beautiful flowers can be found, unusual geological features called solution pipes exposed by wind erosion stand above the sand dunes, appearing like fossilised roots. The coastline is beautiful and rugged.

The cliffs at Twilight Cove are impressive natural fortifications towering 70 metres, their vertical limestone walls provide homes for all manner of creatures flying and otherwise. Here is a link to a video we made <click here>

On our return journey we are greeted by Pink Cockatoos I’m sure they recognise us as they hover above us and seem comfortable with our presence, some even escort us down the beach.

The beach changes daily, strong winds build mounds over beached seagrass and seaweed
