It is a beautiful morning that we wake to, it is quiet, with the exception of birds and occasional Grey Kangaroo bouncing by.

We make a stop at the Baroota Homestead ruins, we also meet a German couple travelling the world in their van, that’s adventure.

A mandatory stop at the beautiful Australian Arid Lands Botanic Garden at Port Augusta, it has a number of desert landscapes displaying the unique and beautiful plants you can find there. There are a number of rare plants. It supports a good cafe (with good coffee) and shop, there are also watering points for birds and consequently there are plenty of them.

Then onto Fitzgerald Bay, the drive down to the coast is spectacular, the campsite is free with basic amenities, which includes free wifi. and a donation is most welcome. The beach is long and wide, and full of interesting critters and washed up seagrass, a few grey mangroves; the ocean is a variety of pale and deep blues, and is mesmerising in its beauty.

There are a number of walks you can do, including information boards along the way. The road in, and the campground abut onto a military training ground, and would you believe it, there is a picture of me with my Bren Gun walking to a Caribou transport plane (circa 1980’s). What are the odds?
