After leaving Malanda we dropped into a friends place at Cairns and then continued south to stay with family at Townsville. The next day we drove south, stopping for a short break just south of Inkerman, where we counted over 600 Brolga in the nearby paddock, quite a sight.
Camp tonight is Jaxut camp ground in Cathu State Forest. It’s a quiet location only one other camper. The 12 km track is washed out in many sections and there are plenty of low tree limbs and creek crossings, hence few campers. Plenty of birdlife and as night falls we have been visited by one Brushtail possum, in the distance a Rufous Owl is calling.
Our plans have changed and we are catching up with family in Toowoomba so we are covering the distances a little more quickly. We head south through Rockhampton then west, travelling along the Burnett Highway, stopping at the lookout to look back towards Rockhampton. We drop into Mt Morgan. This town has an interesting and well managed railway museum, it’s worth spending time there. Plenty of mining and railway history.
We stop at Dululu for the night. We have fond memories of this small town. We first started exploring Australia with our then not very old child in our Commodore wagon. One instance, we were towing a trailer and had some mechanical troubles. We had just come through this little town. It was a Saturday afternoon no phone, no radio, no shops just a mechanic workshop. The local mechanic with no questions asked no cost to us, gave up an hour helping us back on the road, our appreciation of the generosity of country folk has remained with us ever since.
