Cooktown and back 8 July 2023

We leave Jourama Falls and make our next stop Innisfail. Time to wash cloths and do some shopping. We lived in Innisfail 36 years ago and enjoy visiting our home at the time, walking and driving along the streets and spending time at Etty Bay, where a Cassowary made its rounds.

Our camp tonight is the backyard of the Garradunga Hotel, a beautiful old timber and brick building, friendly staff, good food and plenty of grassed area to setup our camper trailer. We enjoy a meal at the pub, enjoying the night sky amongst the cane fields, banana farms, remnant rainforest and rainforest covered hills. Flying foxes are feeding in the fig trees while Bush Stone-curlews (red form) wail.

We hear a small amount of drizzle on the canopy overnight and wake to heavy cloud in the morning. We can’t remember this being a ‘July thing’ when we lived up here. The morning chorus includes Noisy Friarbird, Peaceful Doves, Willie Wagtails and many others making for a lovely background for an early breakfast. We see a pair of Double-eyed Fig Parrots, a cane train is on the move as it’s cane cutting season.
