Qld to WA – Sand and Water 2022 17 October

The night was clear and the stars were blazing, and the same clear sky greeted us in the morning. We take the time to walk along the main street of Peterborough, once known as Petersburg, and what an interesting town. There is plenty of history to explore, particularly rail history. We visited the Town Carriage Museum, this was really worthwhile, from indigenous to present time it was honest and informative a lot could be learnt if one took time to read the display boards.

The town centre is full of beautiful and historical buildings, we take a peek in the town hall, it is absolutely magnificent

Peterborough is very friendly to the caravanning community. A great caravan park and the main street is set up for vans to drive and park without obstructing the flow of traffic. We test out the RV facilities with our grey water jerrycan.

From Peterborough we travel the back blocks via Yongala, this being the town that recorded the lowest temperature in South Australia. The farmland is healthy and the crops are not far from harvesting, or baling for hay as it is mostly oats, we think.

We have lunch at Burra and continue on to Eudunda then Mt Pleasant, and Milang via Monarto. Travelling the eastern side of the Mt Lofty ranges always makes for a picturesque drive, and, as we descend off part the range we can see the Murray River in the distance.

Despite South Australia’s poor tree clearing protection in early settlement years we can still find some amazing flora and fauna. Plenty of stumpy lizards, Tiliqua rugosa, and Blue Tongues, even a Brown snake. The Eremophila are most notable, varied and beautiful. The name Eremophila is derived from the Ancient Greek ἐρῆμος (erêmos) meaning “lonely” or “desert” and φίλος (phílos) meaning “dear” or “beloved” alluding to the species’ adaptation to arid environments. Camp is at Milang on the shore of Lake Alexandrina, a old childhood stomping ground. The caravan park is only half full, which is unusual. We walk out to the jetty, plenty of pelicans on the water. The southern skies with their pastel coloured twilight make good opportunities for lovely photos.
