We had showers over night so the morning was fresh and cool. We enjoy the sunrise and a slow start to the day. The seagrass has built up into great mounds that cover the white sandy beach, its not a distraction as its a seasonal event and many species would benefit from compositing of such a huge amount of biomass.
We head northwards along the Coorabie Road passing through the salt flats of the Fowlers Bay Conservation Park. The Coorabie township with school reminds us of the challenges the remote farming communities have with servicing the community. Over 1000km from Adelaide and over 100km from Ceduna corner stores or a school are a blessing. The large Mallee trees are giving way to short shrubs the further west we go and when we pass the official start of the Nullarbor the trees are absent.
We travel onto the Nullarbor roadhouse topping up with diesel and having a look at the old store, we are enjoying mild weather, but summer under a tin roof with no insulation would have been a challenge.
We visit Bunda Cliffs located on Wirangu country, and part of the Yalata Aboriginal land. For a small fee you can visit the lookouts and take advantage of the informative boards and amenities. The view along the coast and cliffs is awesome. This is a great place to watch the Southern Right whales who appear in May, some had been seen recently though we didn’t, we did see a seal.
We continue to head west, dropping into a few spots to view the cliffs that plunge vertically into the Southern Ocean. The last one is our camp for the night, we can see the cliffs, we can hear the surf and the sky is clearing.
