2021 trip – day 22 Gym Beach to Winninowie Conservation Park

We have a slow start to the day enjoying the sunrise over Gym Beach. We head northwards, travelling along the coast to Corny Point, then onto Port Rickerby where we traverse the conservation drive (Billy goat track). It’s great scrub, with close views of the limestone shelf that is submerged at high tide. We drop into Port Victoria the home of the three mast ships (Wind jammers), which were still transporting wheat to England in the early 1930’s. We read about ‘Like it and lump it”, (pictures below) first world problems are minor in comparison, talk about tough characters.

The mallee and sand dune country around the Yorke Peninsula is beautiful and then magnificent with the coastline landscapes. Its really worth spending a lot of time here.

We drop into Moonta and have a quick look around the historic Copper mining town and its infrastructure. We buy a Cornish pastie, Moonta is part of the Copper Coast and was pioneered by Cornish immigrants and their pasties are legendary.

Camp tonight is Winninowie Conservation Park a mangrove estuary bordered by salt bush and mallee. The wind is a cold gale ❄️ from the south so it might be an early night. Good news is if there are any midgies or mosquitoes they are now in the Northern Territory.
