We are up before the sun, the wind from last night has stopped but the temperature is 5°. Before driving out we look at the tidal beach, dunes and old growth mallee. We watch formations of wetland birds heading for the coast, and given the shallow nature of this coastline they will have some distance to travel as it has retreated a long way seaward because of the low tide.

We refuel at Port Augusta making good time to stop at Cowell and Tumby Bay. The painted silos in both towns are clever works of art. It makes for a notable tourist destination.

We overnight at the Port Lincoln Caravan Park at North Shields to enable us to reply to emails and plan our route through Western Australia to ensure we avoid all the Covid-19 impacted sites. Mobile phone connectivity will diminish the further west we go, so we take advantage of the good 4G network. Dinner is at the local, the Wheatsheafs Hotel, a warm and cosy venue frequented by the locals serving good meals and ales.

Up early to explore Lincoln National Park. It’s an easy park to explore, the north of the park is serviced by good roads and facilities, if you like some adventure take some of the 4WD tracks that head to isolated beaches like Spalding Cove. Beautiful white sandy beaches bordered by seagrass meadows and cystal clear water on one side and cliffs and malleebushland on the other. If you really are adventurous take the Memory Cove track, it takes 2 hours to travel 25 km without shaking your vehicle up too much, but despite a rocky track the scenary and wildlife make it all worth while. The birdlife is prolific and varied we are now seeing the western species of birds we would see in the eastern states.
