We have a final walk along the beach at Cape Tribulation, then pack up and drive north up along the Bloomfield Track, a relatively easy gravel track but very steep in places, with some sections having a 27° – 31° slope. With our trailer it’s a slow climb and decent in low range second gear.
We make a quick look at Cowie Beach, another sandy beach sandwiched between sea and rainforest. A lot less people here as the track this far is recommended 4WD only.
The climb up the ranges provides some wonderful views of the coastline. The rainforest is magic to travel through and the creeks are running and crystal clear.
We passed through the community of Wujal Wujal and Bloomfield, it is beautiful forested countryside.
We had a quick stop at the Black Mountain, a stark mountain size pile of black granite rocks. It’s then onto Cooktown where we will spend time with our friend. It has been a great time getting a personal tour of the local area.
We can highly recommend the Grassy Hill Lookout and Botanical Garden, the cafe at the Botanic Gardens has great food and the Vera Scarth-Johnson Gallery is a must see. The Cooktown Botanic Gardens were established in 1878 making them one of Queensland’s oldest regional botanic gardens. The Gardens are located within the 62 hectare Gallop Botanic Reserve, situated 1.5km from the centre of Cooktown.
We have a couple more days here.
