NSW – VIC – SA – QLD – Robe to Victor Harbour

Grey skies as we wake this morning and the wind is icy, even so it can help to produce some nice photos. We wander around Robe, it has an interesting coastal landscape and mixture of dune systems and rugged limestone cliffs. We visit the old gaol, and given today’s temperature it must have been a terrible place to be locked up.

A stop at Kingston at the bakery for morning tea, and enjoy a good old fashion South Australian pastie.

We travel northwards along the Coorong, this is a special region, Ramsar listed, devoid of crowds and supports abundant wildlife. The shallow inshore estuary is beautiful and isolated, and is recognised world wide and recorded as such in Australian movies (Storm Boy) and artwork. We drive in to check out one of the campsites and was lucky to see a Rufous Bristlebird, Dasyornis broadbenti. Big Grey Kangaroos lying about, wouldn’t like to have one of these guys get upset with you. The Grebes are in big numbers counted over 20 birds in one group, there were many groups.

We stop for lunch at Meningie then onto Milang, Point Sturt and Clayton all areas located around Lake Alexandrina, a freshwater lake filled by the River Murray. The lake is full. The limestone cliffs around Point Sturt and Clayton make for good photos. The countryside is wet but in great condition, Point Sturt is the best I have ever seen it. The Finniss river is flowing, which is good to see. We then reach family at Victor Harbor our base for the next few days.
