A bright sliver of red light and cold air greets us at Coober Pedy as we pack to go further south. There is more to explore but its always good to leave this to another day as we are sure we will be passing through again another time.

We take time to stop at Bon Bon for a drink and then Lake Hart for a walk to the salt lake, which is unusually full of water, its quite a sight. The lake is almost full and is given its salty shallow nature it’s pink in colour. There is so much water about, Inland Lagoon has water and the surrounding landscape seems inundated in patches.

We reach Woomera and have a quick meal at the Heritage Centre and Museum. It looks well setup and informative so we will be back in the morning to spend some more time there. Its not only the military history it’s the indigenous and Len Beadell history, the latter is perhaps Australia’s last explorer and creator of what are now many of Australia’s iconic remote 4WD tracks. I met Len at a geology lesson at Adelaide uni when I was very young at a time when his remote track construction was legendary. The heritage centre opens at 6:30 am, that’s a military establishment for you.

We noticed that the Woomera Theatre is showing the movie the Lost City, with Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum so we decide to go along. This was a great idea, the theatre is run by volunteers and retains its old charm and historical design and feel. It’s a wonderful venue and surprisingly the movie was good fun entertainment. It seems the military want to up grade the seating, which would be a shame. Perhaps they could just invest in some soft floral patterned cushions and issue to staff when using the theatre for briefings.
