2021 trip – day 46 Gawler Range to Mt Lofty Ranges

It’s our last day on the road as we are heading back to catchup with family in the Mt Lofty ranges. We will do a few short trips and then back on the road again by the 16 June.

We made our way along the back roads to get onto the Iron Knob road. We travel through extensive woodlands and open blue bush country fringed with spinifex. Most of the roads dirt are through the Gawler ranges, and in the morning light it is very pretty countryside.

We come across a recent vehicle wreck, a reminder how dangerous dirt roads can be and one needs to be attentive to road conditions as they can change suddenly. We wonder if the occupants were injured and if so how did they get help, in this part of the world an ambulance and doctor are a long way away. More on this matter below.

We stop outside Mt Ive where we find a home made submarine not a bad effort. This is our breakfast stop.

Further down the track is an old telephone box near Siam used to collect donations for the Royal Flying Doctors Service, which we are glad to have the opportunity to make a donation to this essential and admirable organisation. It is this service who provide medical services in these remote locations without them many lives would have been lost.

Once we get to Iron Knob we are on the bitumen and make a stop at Port Augusta for fuel and Mambray Creek for lunch.

We keep heading south and make the ranges before night fall.
