2021 trip – day 43 Mexican Hat to Hiltaba

While we got a sprinkle of light rain overnight the morning is cool and cloud is light. The beach and cliffs with their dunes perched upon them bathed in the soft morning light make for a picture postcard sight.

A short walk up to the cliff following a track through the dunes. The limestone in some sections forms tortured delicate shapes, another good reason not to walk to close to edge of the cliffs.

We wander on and explore Scott Beach and Scott Point. The waves again are throwing themselves at the coast, one set of curling waves after another, you can see the cliffs in various states of collapse due to this onslaught.

Driving into Fowlers Bay and on to Ceduna for lunch and picking up spare parts and supplies. Then to Hiltaba, along the Eyre highway then onto the Kingoonya Road. This dirt track took us through mallee, along side salt lakes recently filled in some cases by recent rain it’s a wonderful sight to see, through salt bush country and into the ranges. We stop at the Hiltaba homestead now managed by Nature Foundation SA, its a grand old building.

On our way to camp we saw our first wombat on this trip, he didn’t seemed too fussed about us being there.

Camp is at Pretty Point a secluded campground about 8kms from the homestead, there are only a few of us here. The night is cooling quickly, a small but hot fire and a silent night is starkly different from the previous night on the coast.
