Up early to catch the rising sun over the Anson Bay. The sky is filled with birds of all types but Wood Swallows, Bee-eaters, Martins and dragonflies are in force seemingly cleaning up the flying insects. A pair of Brahminy Kites and a White-bellied Sea Eagle occupy their respective perches. Surprisingly mossies and midges are few but insect repellant strongly recommended. A pod of dolphins can be seen corralling fish, an occasional dolphin leaping out partially to snap at what seem fish.
A few Emerald Doves patrol the camp, they are a brilliant green bird. We check out the interesting plants that can be yfound here.
The only unfortunate issue about Channel Point was the obvious large number of recreational fishers who discarded their rubbish bags and remnants of catch in the rainforest. We collected a large garbage bag full just near our camp. Clearly not interested in looking after the environment.
We have a look at the boat ramp and leave for Lichfield National Park. We drop into Wangi Falls for a swim. It’s a sizeable waterfall with a sizeable bunch of tourists present.
Onward ho and it’s the Blythe homestead. These pioneers did it tough. An account of a young girl having her hand smashed by a kick from a horse makes you shudder. No doctor. Family member manipulates bones back into place and in two weeks back at work with arm in sling. The youngest boy had a crocodile for a pet, it accompanied the young lad on his trips and was scarred of his larger kin making its way back to camp from the river rather than end up as dinner.
We continue down the Reynold River Track. This is a good 4WD track that gives us a view of the wetlands, grassy plains and creeks in the park. It traverses the the western lower half of the park is about 40 kms long and has some interesting river crossings.
We enjoy a dip in the warm waters of the Douglas River, frogs are abundant we see a small barramundi patrol the banks of the river. Critters scurrying about, still haven’t sighted what the are.
