Tjuwaliyn (Douglas) Hot Springs to Channel Point – Day 28

The warm water is too inviting so we have another swim in the river. The water literally bubbles up very warm in or along along the river and mixes with the cool river water. This is a women’s business place for the local Wagiman people so some areas are to be avoided, particularly for men.

The trip northwards takes us along the old back road to Adelaide River. It’s a beautiful drive through the heavily wooded hills, water is also abundant. We stop at Robin Falls, water seems to just flow out of the hills and forest. Some camping spots are here but no facilities.

We continue to Adelaide River. It’s a busy place full of caravaners. We continue on into Lichfield National Park and leave the bitumen heading East to Channel Point. It’s a mixture of cattle and Aboriginal land, Savannah and wetlands. To our surprise when we reach Channel Point it’s a monsoon rainforest habitat that borders a sandy beach and mangrove lined shoreline. We walk along the beach. Can’t help taking plenty of photos of mangroves for the mangrove researchers back

We spend the afternoon watching the ocean scenery, shorebirds, birds of prey and rainforest birds are common; what a mix of species. The Emerald Dove is particularly a nice find. The facilities here are basic, but shower (albeit cold) and flushing toilet in a remote location is great!. The place seems popular with fisherman and couple of groups are in camp.

Flying foxes are making use of the forest and a few marsupial critters heard but not yet seen scamper around the campsite.
