Greece day 7 – 8

More conference stuff for me while Marg travels to the countryside visiting Vergina and tomb of King Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, a winery and looong lunch. Meanwhile I experience an earthquake back in Thessalonki most of us make a beeline for the door the Greeks and Indonesians seemed little concerned. The building shook and chandeliers swayed apparently a moderate quake only! We later find out that it was quite strong just a long way off and 90kms underground.

We have dinner in the centre of Thessaloniki trying more food and drink and wander around the markets and streets. The city is a museum itself with many ancient sites adjacent to the new.

Sunday morning we take a trip to Mt Athos. A two hour drive from Thessaloniki and then onto a boat.

Mt Athos is on a peninsula south east of Thessaloniki and is the home of 19-20 monasteries built through the ages. Again through the ages these monasteries have fared differently during invasions of every kind. The Latin crusaders did more damage to the monks and the monasteries, the Ottomans largely left them alone and life continued.
