We are up dressed, fed and on the road even before the outback cyclists, these guys and girls ride pushbikes along the same roads we drive.
We dodge a few cows and big roos but by far the most dangerous animal on the road are those with 4WD and trailers. Many drive too fast, drive without their lights on and show no common sense or courtesy to other drivers. The Gibb Road has plenty of examples of wrecked vehicles and trailers a testimony to these dangerous drivers.
We turn onto the Kalumburu Road and make a quick fuel stop at Drysdale Station then onto Mitchell Falls. This country makes the drive from Brisbane all worth it. Its landscapes and wildlife never ceases to surprise. The country is quite lush and green, we don’t see as many burnt areas as last year,
We set up camp have lunch and then take a quick dip at the top of little Mertens Falls. The walk to falls is different this year too, very bushy with lots of Pandanus litter there was none last year due to fire. A pair of Pied Imperial Pigeons fly by, there are rainforest patches that support these species. Reptiles and many birds seen already, phasogales and quolls are here too but generally seen at night.
After dinner we already had a sugar glider pay us a visit.
