Great Australia Bight – Cliffs, sand, mallee and whales. 20 July 2024

We have made our way to Mambray Creek at the base of Mt Remarkable travelling via Woodsides Melba Chocolate Factory and the Cheesewrights. Then onto the Clare Valley to Jim Barry wines then onto camp.

The wind blows up as a front moves into Southern Australia but hiding near the creek line amongst the River Red Gums it’s relatively quiet in the camper.

Thankfully we travel south as the wind roars as a north westerly at 30 – 40 kph gusting up to 80kmph.

Port Lincoln is home for a few days while we catch up with family. It gives us time to explore the coast while the sea crashes into the limestone cliffs. We take a walk along Sleaford Beach, where the sand is a purple colour due to the erosion of the Garnet Gneiss bedrock.

There are tributes through this area to Matthew Flinders, one notably being the well where he and his crew found fresh water which he required to continue his voyage.
