With our guests self guiding on some of the many tracks here it gave us a good opportunity to continue to explore the western dune systems. The small mallee acacia habitats that exist on knolls of sand are home and food source for many birds. It would make a good science paper to look at the application of island biogeography as it applies to these fragmented islands of vegetation in a sea of sand. The sand is on the move and some vegetated islands are winning and others are drowning under sand.
