We enjoyed a cool clear sky this morning while eating breakfast and even beating the sunrise. It’s a long drive across Nullarbor but we enjoy the gentle hills covered in mallee and the saltbush/bluebush that stretches across to a vast horizon. Stopping at Yalata and at the Head of the Bight, the coastal landscape along this stretch of road is some of the most picturesque you will find anywhere. The sea was a mix of turquoise and sapphire blue and as the wind was from the north the Southern Ocean was relatively flat.
As we continued to head west the clouds became heavier with an increase in the likelihood of rain. When it did arrive it was gentle and intermittent, not a lot, but the breeze cooled off with a promise of a chilly night and maybe clear skies for the ANZAC dawn service here tomorrow.
This is area is Mirning country. Mirning are among the world’s oldest peoples with a lineage passing through generations for over 60,000 years. Their distinctive sculptural art from the Koonalda cave has been dated to over 30,000 years ago and continues in their art today.
We reach Eucla WA, and enjoy dinner at the Eucla Motel restaurant before retiring to our camp.
