Western Australia adventure – 20 April 2025

Today we explored the Lincoln National Park and the Memory Cove Wilderness Protection Area, an extensive area of Mallee woodland, grassland, coastal heathland and stunningly wild and beautiful coastline. The extreme wind and passing squalling rain only added to the untamed character of this region.

You need to visit the Information Centre in Port Lincoln to gain access to tracks in this park. There is a locked gate to restrict the number of visitors to the park and the key is available from the centre.

While much of this region is a limestone landscape there is still plenty of metamorphic geology. The combination of limestone and granite results in a mixed coastal landscape. This adds to the diversity of flora and the general fascination of this stunning area.

Plenty of birds to see also, emus, honeyeaters, gulls and a majestic White-bellied Sea-eagle but one of the best discoveries was a few Rock Parrots, Neophema petrophila. Attractive small parrot of southwestern Australia. Dull olive-green parrot with yellowish lower belly and limited blue in folded wing. Face pale blue between eye and bill, with thin blue line between the eyes. The juvenile has yellow on face. Feeds on the ground in open coastal salt marsh and coastal grasslands.

As for fauna we saw kangaroos, seals and a dolphin exploded from the water in spectacular dive.

Hard to see but Rock Parrot, Neophema petrophila are there.
