Western Australia adventure – 16 April

We have a slow start and by 10am we had left the peaceful campsite of Stoney Creek Bush Camp caravan park. We had time to do a bird survey, plenty of them from the parrot/galah family. We use the iPhone App Birddata.

Hancock’s Lookout is well worth a visit, it’s just a little way from Wilmington on the Horricks Pass road. Absolutely magical view across the north part of Spencer’s Gulf and beyond, there is also great geology. The landscape is desperate for water but regardless the big trees here are at least 200 – 300 years old.

It’s then onto the Australian Arid Lands Botanical Garden\ just north of Port Augusta, great garden with a wonderful collection of arid species. The staff are friendly and we chat to the gardeners about Eremophila as we have seen many species and have just as many questions.

We head south down the Eyre Peninsula and make a quick stop at Cowell to stretch our legs. Then it’s on to our campsite at Lipson Cove Conservation Park just north of Tumby Bay. The shorebirds are prolific here and there is a Small Fairy Penguin colony just offshore on a nearby Lipson Island. The coastline is picturesque and the beach is covered with all kinds of seashells, it’s nice to see. The geology is interesting here too.

As the sunsets we can hear the chorus of Silver Gulls, Black Faced Cormorants and Terns settling for the night, we are listening out for Little Penguins. The moon over the ocean was pretty special.
