High Country, ranges, hills and desert 8 Sept 2023

It rained and hailed over night and there is an approaching severe weather warning for a system passing through southern Australia there is snow expected in the high country and strong winds for much of the south. We head off through East Gippsland through tall forests then farmland and down into Melbourne where we catch-up with family.

Next day we headed North West to the Grampian Mountains. The Grampians are a series of five spectacular sandstone ridges running north to south with steep and craggy slopes on the eastern side and gentler slopes to the west. They are the result of earth movements lifting and tilting the hard sandstones to create an impressive landscape of peaks and valleys. There are lookouts with stunning panoramic views as well as a number of impressive waterfalls.

It was good to see the Gang Gang cockatoo on our travels, seen in the high country and Grampians.

We continued west to reach Stirling in the Mount Lofty Ranges where we will relax with family who live here for a few days. The trip from the Grampians was windy with quite a few showers. The first day here saw the cold front move through, strong wind, rain and hail but it’s clearing and we expect warmer spring days to arrive.
