Border rivers, opal and bilbies – 17 April 2023

It’s a cool morning with a South West wind starting up but it’s a fabulous bird watching morning at Myninya lake. The Mulga Parrots and Ringnecks (race Barnardi) are out in big numbers, Black-fronted Dotterel, Elseyornis melanops, Spotted Bowerbird, Darters, Brolgas and many others. For those who are patient and quiet they will be rewarded.

This is a great campsite, it’s a long way from civilisation but it has a flushing toilet and cold water shower, we feel very spoilt. There is no one in the campground, just us, the campground is limited to a few sites. The road in is described as medium difficulty but with a capable vehicle and appropriate speed and caution it presents no real challenges.

We do some exploring looking at some of the remaining farm infrastructure, and impressive old engine remains. We also take time to sit under the Coolibah trees around the lake foreshore and watch the world go by.

Beautiful mild evening ends the day, many and varied birds making their last calls as twilight dims, it’s going to be a good night for star gazing.
