The morning is substantially different from yesterday afternoon/evening, blue sky and light breeze. Breakfast is at the Woomera Heritage Centre cafe, its used by base staff and tourists. The museum that is part of the same complex is always worth visiting.
A quick drive up to Roxby Downs the major centre and home to the Olympic Mine, where uranium, copper, gold and silver is mined. Roxby Downs’ population varies but it is about 4,500, it has many services and shops probably more than comparable sized towns,
We move further east and pass the Olympic mine village and mining operations, it’s a massively big operation. Then we turn onto the Borefield track, travelling through gibber plains, dune fields and dry lake country, then left onto the Oodnadatta track and head north. We stop at old Ghan railway line infrastructure and mound springs. The Bubbler and Blanche Cup Springs are favourites to stop at, the Bubbler appears more active than usual and this is consistent with chat that since the capping of bores on the Great Artesian Basin water pressure has improved. We also stop to look at Lake Eyre South, there is apparently about 0.8m of water in it but given the strong westerly wind it is likely to be pushed to the eastern shoreline and out of sight .
We roll into William Creek with plenty of time to setup camp. We have dinner at the hotel, a few drinks and chats with fellow travellers. There a few relics in a park opposite the hotel that are worth looking at, old rockets from the Woomera rocket testing days and wool and shearing equipment amongst them.
