Tobermorey to Alice Springs – day 4

The birds and station staff arising early for mustering wake us today.  We watch 4WDs with trail bikes onboard and chopper depart at sunrise, looks like fun but we are sure it’s hard work.

We call up VKS Alice Springs Base via our HF just to let them know where we are and prove the radio works. Alice Springs is some 450km away.

We head off for Alice Springs meeting only a couple of vehicles and Greg. Greg is a lone push bike rider we stopped to greet. When we stopped is face was a mass of flies, have you ever seen the movie the “Fly”, he could of taken the star role. Greg said he was developing a relationship with his flies. Greg is peddling from Perth to the Sunshie Coast. Talk about tough and he has done similar before. Thankfully he is easy going. We chat for about 10 minutes. He was talking about looking forward to eating steak when he reaches Tobermorey Station rather than his staple diet of stew. We check he has plenty of water and exchange road conditions and we leave Greg and his flies to their journey.

We stop for the mandatory photo of the giant termite mound.

Road conditions deteriorate and it makes for slow going. We stop for lunch in the shade and enjoy a panorama view of the MacDonnell Ranges. We reach Alice Springs at 4pm.

The Caravan Park we are staying have a few musicians playing to the park attendees. Guitar and didgeridoo, hot meal, it’s a nice finish to the day.
