Despite the chorus of galahs, corellas and noisy all sorts we didn’t get away until 8:45am.
We try out Marg’s potable water system. We have three 20litre fresh water jerries in series with a submersible pump in the middle one. It all runs on a 12v battery. Push the button at the back of the truck and presto you have running water. Woohoo. : )
We fuel up at Quilpie and head for Windorah where we have lunch on the Cooper Creek. Despite the landscape being very dry there is quite a lot of water in the creek, and is a nice spot to camp overnight. Not this time for us though, however someone did camp there last night and left the ashes from their morning fire without appropriately putting them out. Such a dangerous and thoughtless practice.
Back on the road and we pass many grey nomads some in convoy heading back towards Quilpie.
The clouds are building up again and by the time we re-fuel at Windorah the storms clouds have formed and are on the move. One local said “will be fine”, not much rain about. 50km out of Town and the road is running water and thankfully it’s bitumen else we would be going nowhere. Can’t complain though the country is very dry and all creatures great and small are thirsty. The cattle are drinking water off the road where rain has fallen.
We try to dodge the weather heading North West even skipping Diamantina National park so we stay on the hard gibber and avoid the black soil plains . We get caught in one storm plenty of rain and lightening, given we are the highest object on a gibber plain flat as a billiard table it’s a little bit of a worry, thankfully we are a moving target.
We make the bitumen and see some awesome thunder heads moving across the landscape.
Adjusted the tyre pressure to cope with the gravel roads, had to satisfy our curiosity and see how the tyre pressure and temperature change over time from start to finish. Even with a 10 minute stop at Quilpie the results are interesting. If you are a 4WD friend check the science : )
We find a council run camping ground at Bedourie with hot showers, luxury!
No internet or 4G, 3G no G anything. Seems if you are a mining town you get connectivity but Ag towns like Windorah and Bedourie have nothing, figure that out in the 21st century.
