Greece 2014 – day 2

We spent the day travelling to Delphi the centre of the Earth. The rich history and stories associated with the region make this a must see for all regardless of colour or creed. The museum housed some amazing relics including the only remaining bronze statue from the classical Greek period. Delphi emphasizes the Greeks advocacy for nurturing the body, mind and spirit – and all things done in moderation.

A night walk around Athens and it seems all Athenians are all doing the same. Every body is out walking (some dancing) or wining and dinning, the streets are just full of people and it’s 9pm on a Sunday. Interesting to note most shops are closed on Sunday and ATMs seem few, its very much a cash economy.

Amazing streetscapes. The roads are lined with Orange trees in fruit, mulberries and olive trees are in flower. Its like an orchard. Many residents fill their balconies with plants and there is Greenspace everywhere. They are certainly making an effort to beautify their city. I seem to recall politicians in SE Queensland wanting to flog off our public Greenspace to developers.

It was local elections today. Big media scrum at Syndogma Square most people seem more interested in the wining and dining. We walked up to parliament house to see the famous military guards. Seems every tourist wants to stand alongside them and have their photo taken and the guards don’t move or flinch.

Stray dogs are about. People seem to leave them alone, they say they protect the tourists. We spoke to a couple of skeptics about the dog stories that was until their recent experience. They were walking back to the hotel late when a pack of dogs appeared and walked with them along the dark streets. At one point one of them bailed up some individual lurking in the shadows, the dogs followed them out of that area and then left them. The dogs are certainly friendly, oddly many of them have collars. We found them sleeping near the entrances of flash hotels on the bitumen near pedestrian crossings, with people, cars and police avoiding them.
