Day 9

Day 9 – Mataranka to Victoria River

Went for walk along botanical walk just out of camp, small patch of Monsoon rainforest with colony of Flying Foxes.

Took photo of water, which flows out ff this land.

Headed off to Katherine. Road is great. 130km.

Stopped at Katherine, big town friendly people. They don’t feed seagulls in the park here just Kites (bird of prey). Small black smudge in photo – bottom of blue section is a Kite diving in to catch a free feed on the wing.

Lunch on the Katherine River.

Hello Clay from Marg at Mater Brisbane.

Stopped at Victoria River Road House Camping ground. Busy but good facilities and quiet. Enjoyed a sausage sizzle in name of a Breast Cancer fund raiser. Then treated to a fire works display Territorian style. Fire works launched from the back of ute. The operators were fearless. I would put them on the front line of any fire support base. They kept the action going as rockets fired off, even when a fire started in the back of the ute they were un-deterred and simply threw the burning object out and the display continued. Apparently fireworks are available from the 1st of July, we think. It is also Territory Day.

Miners also came into town, 3 prime movers with huge loads.

Found a Fresh Water Crocodile sleeping on bridge concrete footing.
