We have been touring the historical and geological sites of the Port Lincoln area. It’s an area of beautiful coastal scenery and wildlife. Mill Cottage and the Port Lincoln Railway Museum are worthy of several visits. These two museums are examples of exceptional community support and effort in protecting the region’s historical values. Sleaford Beach is a wonderfully wild beach only about 20 minutes from town. Beautiful Garnet Gneiss gives a dark purple colour to patches of sand.
A heavy fog at Fowlers Bay makes for an interesting photograph of the jetty disappearing into the mist.
It will be a month long trip before we reach home taking opportunities to view the mallee, cliffs and whales. We make our usual stop at the Head of the Bight and were rewarded with the presence of 3 Mummas and bubbas (Southern Right Whales). They were very close to the viewing areas, and seemed completely at peace with the world.
Our camp tonight is Fowlers Bay, the water is a wonderful mix of blues and the migratory waders search the washed up seagrass for food with little worry about our nearby presence. The town is sitting under a brilliant night sky.
We are handing over duties to the new caretakers and now helping with maintenance and training, a good time to visit a few old favourites places one last time. One last lovely visual farewell from Eyre for now.
We are soon to depart Eyre and take the opportunity to visit Twilight Cove, this time via the Limestone Track and returning along Kanidal Beach. The Limestone Track looks like a Luna landscape in places and has a beauty all of its own.
We continue to find interesting and beautiful flowering plants. The weather has been chaotic and this has brought some welcome rain. However, the rain has cleared the air and when the clouds are gone the night sky is just dazzling.
Had a chance to do some drone work and wildlife photography, Doug the Dugite (snake) is very friendly and doesn’t seem to mind humans. IR camera worked well in capturing the Boobook Owl on digital film.
We had some interesting weather with thick mist covering the sand patch on one day, stormy weather the next. All made for great photographs on the dunes and escarpment.
Our time at Eyre is fast coming to a conclusion. We are busy catching up with tasks that need attention before we go. We have had some more below freezing mornings, and have been enjoying exploring the dunes and admiring the flowers, many we are yet to identify.
