Great Australia Bight – Cliffs, sand, mallee and whales. 12 Sept 2024

It’s a great low tide and there is a high pressure system passing by so we take advantage of the wider beach conditions and travel along Kanidal Beach and then onto Twilight Cove.

There are still large numbers of the shrubs flowering and some of these are strongly perfumed, it’s just like walking through ground floor in a department store (perfume counter).

Beautiful weather accompanied by a strong southeast wind, it was a good time for bird surveys as we know where on the beach they will be sheltering. Several hundred are spotted, mainly Crested Terns and there are Great and Pied Cormorants. We sight Sooty and Pied Oyster Catchers in big numbers on the wing after a White-bellied Sea-eagle disturbs them.

We have sighted several beached whales since our stay and find another at Twilight Cove.
