Qld-NSW-SA March-April 2024 – 5 March

Having a late, relaxed start to the day. We explore the tracks out to the Cranky Rocks waterhole and lookout, they are both great spots. The photos tell the story. The geology around here is interesting so we include a cut and paste of our geological mapping.

We travel back to Warialda and go to the visitor centre, great staff, very friendly and helpful. We are reorganising our travels to manoeuvre around the approaching heat wave. Aiming to head to theSoutheast coast of SA as quickly as possible.

The journey between Warialda and Narrabri via Bingara on the Fossickers Way then south west to Narrabri is delightful and varied. Evidence of good rainfall, the countryside looks fresh and green. Again the geology is interesting.

Just south of Bingara we stop and explore the Rocky Creek Glacial Area. Then we have lunch under the bridge at Bingara on the banks of the Gwydir River.

We stop and have a look at the Sawn Rocks, just a little side trip off the road and a 750m stroll to see an amazing basalt rock formation.

It’s then onto Mt Kaputar, and the Kaputar National Park, a beautiful ancient volcanic mountain range where it is 10° cooler than the surrounding lowlands. It’s about 24°C when we reach the campground and a welcome relief from the heat of the day.

We set up camp quickly and head off to explore a couple of lookouts. Eckford and Bundabulla lookouts are truly picturesque and the surrounding land has been well watered of late and is in spectacular condition.

The wildflowers along the side of the walking track are beautiful, the small skinks are abundant and enjoying warming themselves on the sunlit timber steps. Plenty of birdlife with Pied Currawongs prolific and vocal. As

As we tidy up from dinner we hear a Boobook calling in the distance, it always brings a smile and a lighter feeling.
