Bachsten Camp

We reach Bachsten camp. The track in is rough around the jump ups but otherwise only tricky around some of the waterways.

Many parts of the Kimberley are remote, Bachsten is a remote part of the Kimberley. 140km North West of Mt Elizabeth station. It’s beautiful terrain, travelling between escarpments on open woodland generally, jump ups are very rocky and lumpy in parts. Creek crossings are ok, some soft, some quite rocky. There are vine thickets in sections of the escarpment.

We pass Jamison arch, a large natural archway in the escarpment.

It takes us all day to complete the track in to the Camp.

Bachsten Camp itself is a well organised Bush camp, it has a donkey hot water system, flushing toilets and running water. A recent fire had destroyed much of the camps supplies and solar systems but despite the challenges it’s a great camp.

We have seen many native mammals rarely seen by most people even locals, thanks to Peter the caretakers great local knowledge. We sight Scaley Tailed Possum, Golden Bandicoot, Monjons, a smaller rock wallaby with a very curly tail, Quolls and a Kimberley Rock Rat. The bird life is prolific. So are the native fish, frogs and reptiles. It’s an amazing wildlife haven. Wren Gorge is spectacular and we note it’s significant indigenous cultural importance.
