We leave the plateau and make our way to Kalumburu. We cross the King Edward River a sign that we are leaving this wonderful part of the world. We head north travelling through some beautiful landscapes, the black escarpment near Kalumburu is particularly special. Horses are common and the road is fine until we hit the Carson River and this last section 20 kms to town is pretty ordinary.
We visit the Kalumburu store and fuel up, get our permit and take up the opportunity to use the mission Kalumburu Mission accomodation. The resident Brolga takes an interest in anyone that comes out of the store. The accomodation is air conditioned but not needed as the night is cool.
We catchup with a university research team undertaking fauna surveys using camera traps. This is interesting work and essential as they are investigating areas never influenced by cattle. There is a local market in town tonight to we pay them a visit. We chat to the local medical staff there and other support staff for Kalumburu.
