Greece 2014 – day 4

Today was a day of walking but what a great day. We see the changing of the guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Then a quick trip to the Panathenaiac Stadium, the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games. The Temple of Olympian Zeus and Hadrians Arch, The Acropolis Museum, the Acropolis, the Plaka, the Ancient Agora and Roman Agora, ancient cemetery, dining in the Plaka and again in Monastiraki.

The Acropolis Museum is a work of art itself built over ruins on poles but the some of the floors are transparent so you can see these ruins below your feet. The artifacts are impressive though it’s a pity the poms flogged so many Greek artifacts and as yet haven’t returned them.

The Acropolis despite having a several dozen representatives from every state on the planet present at the same time the area doesn’t lose it’s significance and inspiring qualities. An amazing building for so many reasons – historical, cultural and engineering.

The Plaka (old suburb with very narrow streets and alley ways) is beautiful and nestled into north-eastern slopes of the Acropolis, its a must stop for food and drink. Streets are lined with shops and some owners are on the street to help you to buy their wares.

When you purchase a ticket to the Acropolis it includes entry into many other excavation sites, and within those sites are equally impressive museums. The pottery kept at the Museum of Kerameikos is extensive and also at the Ancient Agora, Museum of the Stoa of Attalos. The Stoa of Attalos is particularly Interesting as it contained examples of sherds, which were used by the people when voting, its some of the earliest records of democracy in action.

Fauna and Flora is given attention in the Agora and it certainly supports many birds and even tortoise.
